High degree of cross-linking

In order to maintain a continuous supply of a crosslinking agent with reduced hydrolysis, a hydrophobic phase (oil) heavier than water can be used. The crystal is embedded in the oily phase surrounded by a minimum of mother liquor. Continuous addition of crosslinking solution close to the crystal over several hours results in a highly degree of crosslinked subunits. The degree of cross-linking can be checked by storing the crystal in distilled water for several days without dilution. The crystal also changes its mechanical properties, after this treatment the crystal is hardened and can be handled with tools such as tweezers.
